Unlocking Success:
My personal journey as a freelancer had its starts and stops, but it truly took off when I overcame defeatism and decided that I possessed the skills needed to succeed. It was only a year ago when I embarked on this path, and since then, I've managed to earn close to $25,000, well on my way to transforming my "side" income into the main course.
**How did I make this leap? Here are some valuable tips:**
**1. Develop a Minimum Viable Portfolio:**
When I began freelancing, one of my biggest concerns was the absence of an extensive portfolio. In fact, I had no portfolio at all. I had previously been a high school English language arts teacher, so my portfolio consisted mainly of argumentative essays for students, which clients weren't interested in.
However, I quickly discovered that a portfolio bursting at the seams wasn't necessary. What truly matters is creating sample work that directly relates to the client's project. It doesn't have to be a job you've previously done; it should be a basic example in the same ballpark. This is your Minimum Viable Portfolio (MVP).
**2. Ignore the Internet Cynics:**
Online forums are rife with cynics who claim that freelancing is impossible and that you'll never earn a full-time income from it. I've learned that these are often the voices of those who gave up. They dabbled for a brief period, threw in the towel, and now spend their time discouraging others.
Don't listen to them.
**3. Choose Projects Wisely:**
Look for projects that you genuinely enjoy or excel at. This applies to both the type of project and its content. I've discovered that I'm a generalist when it comes to topics, but I've also learned through trial and error that I excel in short-form and long-form article/blog writing. Seek out projects that align with your strengths and interests; there's no need to waste time on work that makes you miserable.
**4. Avoid Pro Bono Work:**
While some freelancers may disagree, I firmly believe in not working for free. Think of your freelance work as a regular full-time job; you should be compensated for your time and skills. Doing pro bono work can undermine the value of your services. While I occasionally offer extras to good, long-term clients, I don't engage in pro bono work.
**5. Start Small, Grow Big:*
In the beginning, you might take on small or low-paying jobs, and that's okay. Be prepared to grow, and when the opportunity arises, don't hesitate to raise your rates. As you gain experience, you'll have the confidence to negotiate higher fees for your top-notch services.
**6. Master Self-Marketing:**
Marketing yourself can be challenging but is essential. Utilize job sites like Upwork, which has brought me much success. However, don't rely solely on one platform. Marketing is a crucial skill. Fortunately, there's an abundance of free online resources to help you become a marketing pro.
**7. Establish a Professional Website:**
A professional website is part of your marketing strategy. It introduces your brand to the world. Keep it simple, especially when starting out. A brief bio, a portfolio of projects, and contact information are all you need.
**8. Treat Freelancing as Work:**
Freelancing offers flexibility, but it should still be treated as a job. Set a schedule and stick to it. Consistency is key to success.
**9. Value Your Services:**
There needs to be value in what you offer. Propose fair rates to clients and be willing to walk away if they are unwilling to pay. As you build relationships with clients, your value will rise.
**10. Persistence Pays Off:**
Freelancing is a journey that requires persistence. Don't let setbacks or negative voices deter you. If you have the skills, passion, and determination, freelancing can be a rewarding endeavor.
In closing, I encourage you to consider these insights as you embark on your freelancing journey. Success is within reach if you're willing to put in the effort and stay dedicated. Best of luck!
